Allah has blessed the human with many emotions. Just like happiness, sadness, anxiety, and excitement, depression is also a state of mind that can make any human feel lost and empty at any time. When someone is dealing with mental, physical, or spiritual tensions, then it is essential to remove the darkness of such concerns and grief from life. No doubt, Allah tests His believer with the tests and tabulations, but Allah has also stated that every difficulty and ease is from Allah. That’s why the best way to turn these afflictions of Allah into reward is by making dua, in which we can seek his mercy and guidance. Dua is the most powerful defense for the Muslims that can change the fate of the person, with Allah’s will. It is the most powerful connection of the Seeker with his creator.
Islam is not only a religion, but it’s a way of living that escorts us in every phase of our lives. It shows the opportunities to its believers by giving them with the bundle of duas that help them to cope with any kind of situation. When it comes to depression, studies have shown that performing Wudu or ablution is the best system that helps you in getting over your depressed soul. Furthermore, science has also confirmed that our body comes to gets normalized when we recite the Quran. Recitation of its surahs can help anyone in getting a peaceful state of mind. Besides this, there are many duas mentioned in Quran that can help us deal with anxiety, depression, and sadness.
We have listed a few duas here that will help you in struggling through your distress and depressed state of mind. These duas will also help you in making your connection stronger with your creator.
1. Dua To Ease Your Depression
We often feel sad when we lose something or someone close to us. The extended period of sadness causes us to believe that we are losing our control. This can also influence us to more depressive thoughts. By making dua, we ask Allah to grant us Sabr and patience, and these two virtues are powerful busters for depressed people.
O Allah, nothing is easy except what you make accessible, and You can make what is difficult easy if You wish.
2. Dua For Twwakal
Indeed Allah is the best planner of all, and He can take care of all affairs of our lives. By developing this Twwakal in the Wise and the All-Knowing, one can surely lower his/her stress level. Trusting on Allah in every matter of life, also help us in remembering Him throughout the day.
O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for a blink of an eye and rectify for me all of my affairs. None has the right to be worshipped except You.
3. Dua For Distress and Worry
Life is not an easy road and is full of problems and stress. Amongst most of our difficulties, some of them remain unsolved no matter how hard we try. This failure or the increase of the obstacles may lead us to fall in profound distress and worry.
The Messager of Allah (peace be on him and blessings of Allah be upon him) once said to Asmaa ‘ bint Umays (May Allah be pleased with her) that,
“Shall I not teach you some words to say when you feel distressed, Depression and Worried?”
Then He (peace be on him and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceed to this dua,
Allah is my Lord, I do not ascribe anything unto Him.” (Abu Dawud 2/87. See also Al-Albani, Sahih Ibn Majah 2/335)
4. Dua For Grief
The person who is suffering from dark thoughts is likely to have the regret of some kind. The grief of sorrow can cause the person to think negatively. Dua can act as a barrier for the people who have any sort of regret or worry and are going through mental suffering.
‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood once told that The Messager of Allah (peace be on him and blessings of Allah be upon him) once said “No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and says:
O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with. Or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.
5. Dua to Acknowledge Allah’s Might
Indeed Allah is Wisest and All-Knowing. We, as a human has limited facilities to control every will of our lives. But knowing that He is the best Planner and the Controller of the entire variables in the world will help us in easing our depression. Realizing Allah’s might in every failure or success of our life is very important.
Ibn ‘Abbaas reported that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say when he felt distressed or depression or was worried:
None has the right to be worshipped except Allah Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the magnificent throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the Earth and Lord of the noble throne. (Al-Bukhari 8/154, Muslim 4/2092)
