The neck is located between the skull and upper torso and is made up of vertebrae. Neck pain is a common medical condition that is caused by the bad posture of the body along with several diseases. Many people experience neck pain or stiffness. It may be due to an injury or whiplash and involves multiple kinds of tissue. Neck pain is not a serious condition; however, if it is not taken care of, it can lead to other problems.
Symptoms of Neck Pain
Some common signs and symptoms of neck pain are:
- Stiff neck
- Tingling in the arms
- Throat pain
- Muscle and shoulder pain
- Arm weakness
Neck pain can occur due to a variety of reasons. It is vulnerable to injury and can be associated with diseases. This results in pain and restriction of motion. Some common causes are:
- Muscle strain:
This usually occurs due to bad posture while sitting and sleeping or not changing position for too long. Jolting your neck during exercise can also strain the muscles of the neck.
The soft muscles of the neck are vulnerable to injury. It can result from falling, whiplash, car accidents or sports. The neck jerks forward and backward and is forced to move outside its normal range causing damage in its muscles and ligaments.
Like any other tissue and joints of the body, joints of the neck start to wear out with age. This results in the deterioration of cartilage between the bones and making them spongy. The motion of joints is affected causing pain.
- Compression of nerves:
The nerves branching out from the brain to the spinal cord is pressed by the herniated disc in the vertebrate. This leads to neck and back pain.
Neck pain is associated with several diseases. These are cancer, heart attack, meningitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, etc.
Neck pain is mostly caused due to poor posture, injury and age-linked wear and tear. With these simple changes in your daily lifestyle, you can easily prevent hurting your neck.
- Maintain a good posture:
To avoid muscle strain, you should maintain a good posture while standing or sitting. Make sure that your shoulders are perpendicular to your hips.
- Take short breaks:
While using a computer or working in an office environment, it is necessary to take short breaks to give rest to your body. You should stand up, move around and stretch your neck and shoulder muscles.
- Change your position:
Your phone and computer screen should be at your eye level and knees slightly lower than the hips. This helps to keep your back straight and prevents back and neck pain.
- Location of mobile during a phone call:
While talking on a phone, it is best to avoid placing the phone between your shoulder and ear. This strains the neck muscles. Try to use headphones instead.
- Avoid putting weight over your shoulders:
Carrying heavy weight strapped bags over your shoulder should be avoided as it can put pressure on your neck.
